Detail: On 18 January, 1912, Captain Robert Falcon Scott, RN, (1868-1912), and his expedition reached the South Pole, only to discover that Amundsen had beaten them to it. Scott and his party perished on the return trip. Scott was initiated into the Drury Lane Lodge No. 2127, London, but was raised in Christchurch, New Zealand whilst on a voyage, with the "Discovery" in 1904. Scott was also a member of Navy Lodge, No. 2612, as was explorer Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922). Despite appearing on many Navy Lodge summonses throughout the period, Shackleton attended the first regular meeting of Guild of Freemen Lodge No. 3525 in 1911 and was passed and raised in this lodge.
